UN Chief says world is at war with COVID-19

Posted: Monday, May 24, 2021. 10:28 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: At today’s opening of the ceremonies for the World Health Assembly, the United Nation’s Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres said that the world is at war with COVID-19.

“We are at war with a virus. We need the logic and urgency of a war economy, to boost the capacity of our weapons,” Guterres said.

Guterres said that over 3.4 million people have lost their lives to COVID-19 and over 500 million jobs had been lost since the start of the pandemic.

“The most vulnerable are suffering most, and I fear this is far from over,” Guterres said.

Guterres called for urgent action in vaccination equality allowing poorer countries access to vaccines to vaccinate their populations.

“Further spikes and surges could claim hundreds of thousands of lives, and slow the global economic recovery, Covid-19 cannot be beaten one country at a time,” he reiterated.

COVID-19 continue to threaten the health and well-being of everyone around the world and this 74th session of the assembly will stress the urgency of ending the current pandemic and preventing the next one by building a healthier, safer and fairer world.

This year’s session will run from 24 May to 1 June 2021, and be held virtually.

Around the world, cases of COVID-19 rose to 162 million and the number of deaths increased to over 3.3 million.

The Pan American Health Organization noted that the  pandemic has hit all countries hard, but its impact has been harshest on those communities which were already vulnerable, who are more exposed to the disease, less likely to have access to quality health care services and more likely to experience adverse consequences (such as loss of income) as a result of measures implemented to contain the pandemic.

According to PAHO’s data, over 75% of all vaccine doses have been administered in only 10 countries meanwhile the lowest income countries have administered less than half a percent of global doses.
