Teachers will continue to strike

Posted: Tuesday, May 25, 2021. 7:53 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has decided to continue strike action in its ongoing labour dispute with the Government of Belize (GOB).

Teachers voted at the branch level yesterday, with over 70 percent of survey participants voting to continue on strike.

The decision also means that the teachers will be planning additional activities to express their discontent with GOB’s handling of cost-saving measures to reduce public spending, particularly the 10 percent reduction to their salaries and three-year increment freeze. The teachers will also be calling for commitments from government for the implementation of good governance reforms.

Last night, the Public Service Union (PSU), via its Facebook account, also announced that it will continue to strike.

The strike is being held despite GOB’s warning that any strike action taken after May 15, will result in a salary deduction.
