Mexico records 34th murder of a candidate ahead of June 6 elections

Posted: Wednesday, May 26, 2021. 10:33 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: A Mayoral candidate in north-central Mexico was murdered on Tuesday while campaigning for the mayorship of Moroleon in Guanajuato.

Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said today that the killing was “without doubt” the work of organized crime gangs.

Thirty-four candidates vying for nominations for local posts have been murdered ahead of the June 6 elections.

Thousands of offices are at stake in the elections as nearly half of the country elects new governors.

Experts say that the gangs want to ensure that “sympathetic” candidates are placed in town halls and city governments so they can operate without any interference.

“When there is a lot of abstentionism, the mafias dominate the elections,” the president said.

Some have referred to it as the most violent election in Mexican history.
