By Benjamin Flowers: The Public Service Union (PSU) is preparing to host its annual general meeting and has written to the Government of Belize (GOB) requesting public officers be given the time off to attend the meeting, despite ongoing industrial action.
The PSU, which has been on strike for 13 days, thus far, wrote to the Office of the Governor-General, Chief Justice, Auditor General, Solicitor General, Financial Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, and all CEO’s and Department Heads, requesting that workers be allowed an early departure from work to attend the meetings being held at the National Agriculture Show Grounds on Friday, May 28.
The union notes that there is a legal provision for such time off, under the Belize Constitution (Public Service) Regulations, 2014, Part 14 Leave of Absence, 173.
The AGM comes at a critical time for the union given the breakdown of negotiations with the GOB, the imminent 10 percent salary cut, and the fact that the post of President is becoming vacant in the middle of a trade dispute. Union insiders said that current PSU President Gerald Herny will not be seeking reelection.
Other seats being elected at the AGM include Second Vice President, Secretary-General, and two councilors.
