By Aaron Humes: Her Excellency Froyla Tzalam’s most recent employer and the Kekchi Maya Council of Belize have congratulated her on her new appointment.
“The Council sees the appointment of a grassroots Indigenous leader as a genuine sign of inclusiveness in our multiethnic and multicultural Belizean society. Her wealth of knowledge and experiences will certainly contribute to a meaningful service for all Belizeans,” the KCB statement said.
SATIIM talked up Tzalam’s long history with the organization, starting as a researcher who wrote the first-ever report on Q’eqchi Maya women’s role in Belize’s economy. The findings influenced her tenure as the first woman to serve as SATIIM’s executive director.
As the Director of the Institute of Social and Cultural Research, she coordinated campaigns to understanding of the Indigenous communities. As SATIIM’s Executive Director, Ms. Tz’alam created pioneering models: communal land mapping; the Maya Lands Registry; and an Indigenous women’s programs.
“As a daughter of San Antonio, a respected cultural advocate, and trusted Maya leader, Ms. Tz’alam brings a unique sense of history and intercultural skill to her role as Governor General,” the statement concludes.
