By Zoila Palma: The COVID-19 vaccination campaign has crossed a big milestone with over 1.7 billion vaccine doses administered around the world.
According to Bloomberg, the first 100 million doses took 61 days.
Experts say that at the current rate, it would take another year to achieve some form of global immunity to COVID-19.
The latest rate is at 29 million doses administered per day.
The United States of America is leading the way in the total vaccine doses administered with a daily rate of 1.7 million doses being administered daily.
There is still a large gap between vaccination programs in several countries.
Countries that have received the COVID-19 vaccines have focused on priority groups including those clinically vulnerable and elderly.
Lower-income countries are fully relying on the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility for access to vaccines.
Most of the COVID-19 vaccines require 2 doses to be fully vaccinated.
