By Aaron Humes: Police Commissioner Chester Williams has explicitly warned those tempted by last week’s plane crash of a jet suspected to be carrying drugs, “please surrender it [the drugs] to the police. Because if the information get to the cartel that you have it they will come for you.”

Appearing on Channel 5 News’ Open Your Eyes morning show on Wednesday, the Commissioner revealed that authorities have been working overtime to try and locate the main body of a plane that crashed off Belize’s southern coast.  Only portions of the plane have so far been recovered.

“It is a deep area. From since this incident occurred on Saturday morning, we have been out in the general area conducting searches. We even hired the Astrum Helicopter to do a fly-over of the entire area to see if they would have been able to see the fuselage in the water and then direct us to where it is. But that too was fruitless. Divers from the Coast Guard are currently in the area. We have assistance from members of the public who are coming the entire area to see if we can find the fuselage. It is our hope that the fuselage is still intact and the drugs may still be in it.”

Williams added that it is possible someone got to the fuselage and put it out of reach of the cops, but recovery would represent a great success for Belize’s war on drugs.
