By Aaron Humes: The Police Department’s Special Patrol Unit assembled en masse at the foot of the National Assembly building, forming a physical barrier between protesting teachers and the various area representatives being dropped off.
We understand that the permit for today’s protest covers only the steps of the National Assembly building below the main road and not the road itself.
But that was of little concern to the teachers who defied senior officer Alden Dawson and even their own president, Senator Elena Smith, who asked that they march once more around the building and then retreat behind the barricades.
A trusted source tells us that no protest has gotten this close to the Assembly in recent memory.
The teachers want to deliver a letter to Prime Minister John Briceño when he arrives, which is expected to be shortly.
