House meets amid continued strike, protest

Posted: Friday, May 28, 2021. 9:49 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Members of the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) defied the police barricades this morning, marching on the road around the National Assembly ahead of today’s meeting of the House of Representatives.

Their union and the Public Service Union and Association of Public Service Senior Managers continue on strike, trying to get the Government to provide proper compensation for the still to be implemented 10 percent salary cut and increment freezes.

Chanting various slogans including “Who is in the House? BNTU!” and “Touch one, touch all!” they insist on all eleven points of their demands be addressed to end industrial action.

Meanwhile inside the House, several points of the good governance agenda of the ruling PUP administration are to be introduced, including civil asset forfeiture and recovery of unexplained wealth, whistleblower protection and eventually campaign finance reform.

More to come from Belmopan as it happens.
