By Aaron Humes: Mesopotamia area representative Moses “Shyne” Barrow is addressing the House of Representatives on a privilege motion.
He was denied the usual right to question Government Ministers afforded in the House today.
Barrow asked the Speaker to consider changing the notice, in which, in this case a public holiday intervened from providing “five clear days” of notice.
He also questioned why he was not allowed to question on the basis of having it previously answered.
Speaker Woods said in reply that while the Standing Order was not clear, the day of notice of the meeting, the day of the meeting itself, weekends and public and bank holidays are not counted, and in any event members need not wait to submit questions, even though Barrow pointed out that issues which demand responses from the House change from day to day.
The Speaker called for a robust debate over the coming weeks in the expected revising of the Standing Orders.
And Prime Minister John Briceño assured that his Government will be willing to address questions submitted on time and within the Standing Orders.
