Two million Mexicans have gone to the United States to get COVID-19 vaccines

By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Two million Mexicans have gone to the United States to be vaccinated against COVID-19 said Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico Deputy Minister of Health and the Mexican Government’s strategist against the pandemic, according to EFE.

“We do not have a direct estimate, but some approximations have considered that this could reach up to 2 million Mexicans vaccinated in the United States,” said the López-Gatell in the daily conference that reports on COVID-19.

López-Gatell made reference to the Mexicans that move along the border with the United States saying “it is likely that this is the largest group of people that has been vaccinated.”

He added that there are people from Mexico City and other cities who are well off economically who have jumped on a plane the United States to get vaccinated.

Additionally, López-Gatell said “there are commercial packages that offer this situation and charge between 14,000 and 15,000 pesos (between $US700 and $US750) for the entire process and there are people who have opted for it.”

EFE said that since in April when Texas, Arizona and Louisiana started immunization without restrictions or the registration of the immigration status of patients, Mexicans have been taking advantage of it though it has been difficult to say how many have done so.

Up to Thursday, Mexico had reported a total 2,405,772 cases of COVID-19 and 222,657 deaths since the pandemic started last year.

Mexican health authorities said that up to Thursday, 28,506,527 doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered and that 12,071,010 people had been fully vaccinated.

Mexico is now vaccinating people 50 years and older plus pregnant women, medical personnel, and educational personnel.
