By Benjamin Flowers: The Government of Belize is planning to reopen the country’s land borders to receive tourists on Tuesday, June 1, a decision that members of the medical community are advising against as Mexico’s COVID-19 situation worsens.

Dr. Fernando Cuellar warned that Mexican health authorities recently upgraded the COVID-19 alert in many major municipalities to “Red” the highest form of alert signaling that the situation is critical. Similarly, Dr. Mark Musa took to his Facebook account to warn that reopening the borders will pose significant health threats to Belize in light of still relatively low vaccination percentages and increasing cases of COVID-19 in Mexico.

“The potential economic benefit of allowing ‘Tourists’ through these land borders does not outweigh the serious risk with another wave of cases in Belize that could end up with another Full Lockdown to regain control again. There is the high likelihood of introducing a more transmissible and deadly Covid variant,” Musa warned.

At Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations Anthony Mahler said that he feels comfortable that the reopening will not pose a problem due to stringent measures that will be implemented at the borders. He also noted that the reopening is to let tourists into the country only and that Belizeans are not yet allowed to venture into Mexico.
