BNTU freezes strike after five weeks; to take pay cut fight to court

Posted: Monday, May 31, 2021. 1:17 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) has officially informed the Ministry of Education, as well as managing authorities of schools that members (approximately 50 percent) have decided to put the strike they called five weeks ago “on hold.”

According to the Union, it plans to file court challenges, presumably against the decision of the Minister of the Public Service to employ his power under the Constitution to deduct salary from public officers and teachers.

The Union reiterates, with their fellows in the Public Service Union and Association of Public Service Senior Managers that the remaining points of interest in their eleven-point agenda are more thoroughly addressed and that the Government returns to the negotiating table. Industrial action now continues from inside the classrooms, to which teachers return starting tomorrow, Tuesday.

The Union closes by thanking its supporters.

We await further details of the nature of the court challenge and other BNTU action, even as the PSU and APSSM officially continue on strike.
