By Rubén Morales Iglesias: After more than a year of competitive in-person inactivity, Belizean athletes have had a number of local events over the last few weeks, including the National Championship, and will now attend four international events during this month.

“Next weekend we are sending our Cross Country team to Guatemala and we’re sending a team to the Mexico Senior National Championships in Queretaro, Mexico from the 11th to the 13th,” said Deon Sutherland, president of the Belize Athletics Association.

“We have the Central American championship which will be on the 26th and 27th in San Jose Costa Rica,” Sutherland added.

Sutherland said that the BAA welcomes these events because they provide Belizean athletes the possibility of qualifying for the Olympics which will be held in Tokyo, from July 3-August 8, 2021.

Additionally, the Belize Triathlon Association and the National Olympics Committee are sending three triathletes, namely Kian Trejo and brothers Brandon and Jordan Santos to Huatulco, Mexico, to compete in Olympics qualifiers being held by World Triathlon on Sunday, June 13.

So far, Belize is sure of one athlete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Amado Cruz was selected by the International Olympic Committee’s tripartite commission to represent Belize in canoeing.  33-year-old Amado Cruz will be Belize’s first-ever canoe athlete to participate in an Olympics Games. Cruz is likely to compete in both the K1 200m and K1 1000m events.
