By Aaron Humes: The National Women’s Commission (NWC) is inviting Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber to become part of the solution, not perpetuating the problem of gender-based and family violence.
His caught-on-camera aggression of the mother of his child in the child’s presence, not to mention a female bus conductor being roughed by two rival employees, is the tip of an iceberg of an increase in reports of violence against women attributed to the frustrations Belizean families faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Commission reports.
Their aggressions, the Commission says, violate the human rights of the women involved and exacerbate adverse effects on families and communities.
Faber in particular, says the Commission, is a public figure and thus a role model, and it would hurt, not help if boys and men are influenced to believe that this is acceptable.
Belize is part of the Engaging Men and Boys to Advance Gender Equality and Help Prevent Gender-based Violence” training which has made great strides, but setbacks like this undo that work and so Faber is being asked to take action starting with himself and encouraging others.
