Senate debates lease to Recological Systems Limited for Commerce Bight Port

Posted: Friday, June 4, 2021. 11:50 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Despite the rejection last week Friday recorded in the House of Representatives, the Senate this morning debated a motion to approve or disapprove of a 25-year lease of the Commerce Bight Port in Dangriga to Recological Systems Limited.

Senate Opposition leader Michael Peyrefitte pointed out that the signing is within the power of the then-Minister, Edmond Castro, despite the National Assembly being dissolved for elections.

And the matter is not treated with by the Finance and Audit (Reform) Act, while the land was leased by Government to the Port Authority as port operator, which in turn was to be subleased to Recological Systems Limited. The new Government could have simply cancelled the lease rather than go through public condemnation on the matter.
