Posted: Monday, June 7, 2021. 1:21 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Some 21 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in and around the village of Santa Cruz, Stann Creek District, since Thursday, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

The “index case” was identified by routine testing in the Mayan King banana farming region as the principal of Santa Cruz Primary School, followed by two close contacts.

Subsequent mass testing on Friday, June 4, 2021 identified 18 further cases from 65 samples tested for a total of 21 positive cases.

There is as yet no indication of where the virus came from.

According to the Ministry, a community fair is being planned for June 10 to conduct mass swabbing and vaccination. Physical distancing guidelines and infection prevention and control measures will be observed.

Up to the end of last week before the identification of this cluster there were 78 active cases countrywide.
