By Zoila Palma: Today, the Belize Fisheries Department joins in celebrating World Oceans Day.

The day is being held under the theme: “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods”.

For the last 2 decades, Belize has embarked on several initiatives geared towards the protection of our seascape.

The ocean holds over 320 million cubic miles of water and covering 70% of the Earth.

The ocean impacts the weather, temperature, food, humans, and other organisms and is the subject of fascination, curiosity, and joy for millions of people around the globe.

The beauty and impact of the ocean is so vast and despite new discoveries, much of it remains a mystery – more than 80 percent of the ocean has never been mapped nor explored encompassing enormous untapped potential for scientific discoveries.

The Belize Fisheries Department reminds us that the human footprint is taking its toll on this awe-inspiring gift.

“Rising pollution level, irresponsible exploitation, unsustainable Development, Invasive species, the influx of sargassum, stony coral tissue loss disease, climate change have led to alarming levels of degradation, threatening its functionality and consequently jeopardizing our very own existence and livelihood,” the Department said.

The Belize Fisheries Department further calls on everyone to act now to restore balance to ensure a better future for the planet.

In addition, the Department calls for progressive efforts, innovative interventions that make positive impacts on the environment and livelihoods of all Belizeans.

Belize has achieved protection of 23.53% of its territorial seas under Marine Protected Areas and 6.28% of replenishment zone within its Exclusive Economic Zone.
