Belize receives support from Central American Bank for COVID-19 emergency

Posted: Tuesday, June 8, 2021. 6:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: After initially approving a Non-Refundable Financial Cooperation for an amount of US$500,000 for each member country of the Central American Integration System (SICA) in February, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) sent Belize’s disbursement to the Central Bank of Belize account.

A statement from the organization says, “This cooperation is provided for countries to continue supporting the efforts that they are making to face the emergency that occurs due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus.” These include purchases of medicine and medical supplies, food, drinking water and other goods, communication campaigns and actions related to the emergency care and affected population; financing to meet the preparation and response plans for COVID-19; financing to strengthen surveillance, prepare health services, prevent the spread of the virus and maintain essential services; and financing for emergency care of the affected population.

Dr. Osmond Martinez, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, participated in a virtual meeting on June 4, 2021, with Dr. Dante Mossi, Executive President, Central American Bank for Economic Integration, to discuss ongoing and potential projects. During his remarks, CEO Martinez emphasized on the importance of Belize’s integration to the Central America region.
