SATIIM commends Forestry Department for issuing stop order on private logging concession in Crique Sarco

Posted: Tuesday, June 8, 2021. 6:22 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) commended the Forestry Department, for issuing a “cease and desist” order on a logging concession that was issued to a private landowner.

SATIIM notes that the concession that the Chief Forestry Officer issued the logging concession (Private Forest Permit No. No: PFP# 13/21)  on May 21, in violation of the  Free, Prior, and Informed Consent process (FPIC), outlined in the Caribbean Court of Justice’s Consent Order in 2015. The organization noted that the applicant also did not have requisite support from the majority of the villagers.

SATIIM noted yesterday that, following a meeting with its leadership, the Commissioner for Indigenous Affairs, and concerned villagers the department decided to issue the stop order.

“SATIIM, which provides technical support to Crique Sarco, commends the Belize Forest Department (BFD) for issuing a “cease and desist” order on all operations with this particular concession. SATIIM views the Forest Department as an important stakeholder and intends to work with the Department to sensitize it to the Consent Order and the FPIC,” SATIIM said.
