Belizean students in ROC-Taiwan say Belize-Taiwan Academic Conference is the product of innovation and ingenuity

Posted: Wednesday, June 9, 2021. 8:58 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize-Taiwan Academic Conference (BTAC) to be held in Taiwan on July 3 is a product of innovation and ingenuity, said a statement by Belizean students in Taiwan.

In announcing the Belize-Taiwan Academic Conference (BTAC) yesterday, the Embassy of Belize in ROC-Taiwan said: “This conference is a medium through which Belizean students can share with Belizeans at home and in the diaspora the benefits of their studies and training in Taiwan.”

“During the uncertainty of a COVID-19 pandemic, innovation and ingenuity continue to be as important as preparedness and a willingness to adapt to inevitable changes,” said the release.

The BTAC will be held under the theme ‘Dialogues of Innovation and Ingenuity.’

The students’ statement goes on to say that though Taiwan had not been as affected as the rest of the world until recently, they as foreign students are aware of how the pandemic has affected Belize and the changes it has provoked worldwide.

They said that has “compelled us to confront approaches we may have to consider to adjust to what is now designated as our ‘new normal.’”

The Belizean students said that “this complex state of being has in part helped to birth the concept of our first annual Belize-Taiwan Academic Conference.”

“Besides creating a space for students to know that, despite these prevalent and at times unpredictable challenges, their studies still have value,  the conference allows presenters and participants to share some of the realizations, innovations, and learnings that local talent were and are able to decipher, engage, and lead during our time as students and paraprofessionals.”

The students’ release said BTAC’s objective is to “create academic dialogues between Belizeans at home and abroad and to forge a bridge between academic interests and tutelage pursued and realized in Taiwan and relevant areas of social and national development in Belize.”

The statement by the Belizean students in Taiwan closed saying that having abandoned their comfort zones in pursuit of personal, social and national development advancements in Taiwan, through the BTAC they want to share their passions, interests, and hard work.

The Embassy of Belize in ROC-Taiwan led by Ambassador Candice Pitts said that “Remarkably, this is a student-led initiative that garnered support from the Embassy of Belize, MOFA-Belize [Ministry of Foreign Affairs], MOFA-Taiwan, CATO, ICDF, MOE-Belize [Ministry of Education], MOE-Taiwan, Ming Chuang University, and National Chung Hsing University.”

The conference will be streamed live on July 3, 2021 at 6:00 pm in Belize, which is July 4 at 8:00 am in Taiwan, on Facebook and YouTube and simulcast on Breaking Belize News, Channels 5 and 7, Positive Vibes, and the Belize Government Press Office.

The Embassy of Belize in ROC-Taiwan said opening remarks will be delivered by Ambassador Candice Pitts, Minister of Education-Belize Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs-Taiwan Pan Wen-chung, and an ICDF Scholarship representative.

The Belize Embassy added that the conference will include Belizean and Taiwanese cultural performances.
