Canada, Curaçao, Salvador, Haiti, Panama, Curacao make it to next round in World Cup Qualifiers

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: On the last day of the first round of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers, Canada, Curaçao, Salvador, Haiti, Panama, Curaçao advanced to the next round keeping their hopes of reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup next year.

For others like Guatemala,  Nicaragua and Belize, a few days ago, that dream is now over.

Haiti advanced from Group E with their 1-0 win over Nicaragua in a hotly contested game in Port au Prince. Derrick Etienne scored the only goal under heavy and consistent rain in the 63rd minute.

In Group A, El Salvador secured their ticket on a 3-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda 3-0 on goals from Eriq Zavaleta, David Rugamas, and Walmer Martínez.

In Group C, the 0-0 draw between next-door neighbours Guatemala and Curaçao gave the nod to the Caribbean side since they had one more goal to their credit despite both recording ten points and a +14 goal differential.

Panama qualified from Group D with their 3-0 triumph over the Dominican Republic. Aníbal Godoy, Edgar Barcenas and Cecilio Waterman scored for Panama to give them a perfect 12 points, five more than the DR.

Canada topped Group B on a 4-nil whipping of Suriname. Jonathan David’s hat trick and Alphonso Davies opener propelled Canada to the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers. They finished their four games undefeated with 12 points, three more than Suriname.

Saint Kitts and Nevis had already advanced from Group F with three consecutive victories which might explain their lackluster performance which resulted in a 2-0 loss to Trinidad and Tobago. Duane Muckette and Khaleem Hyland converted for T&T.

In other games, Montserrat beat Grenada 2-1, Cuba downed Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 1-0, Puerto Rico beat Guyana, 2-0, Barbados and Dominica drew 1-1, while Bermuda and the Cayman Islands also played to a 1-1 draw.
