By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean athletes are participating in international meets in their quest to qualify to the Olympics and Pan American Games. With that objective, the Belize Athletics Association is sending ten Belizean athletes tomorrow, Thursday, June 10, to compete as invited guests in Mexico’s National Athletics Championship in Querétaro.

“We’re sending a team to the Mexico Senior National Championships in Querétaro, Mexico from the 11th to the 13th,” said BAA president Deon Sutherland who had initially said the plan was for the team to leave on Wednesday.

Since national championships are only for citizens of the country hosting them, in this case Mexicans, the Belizean athletes can only participate as invited guests, but their times will be considered for the upcoming international event, including the Tokyo Olympics.

The athletes are Samantha Dirks, Hilary Gladden, Ashontie Carr, Ashantie Carr, Shaun Gill, Mark Anderson, Rahim Monsanto, Jihad Ahmaad, Linden Wade, Gary Neal, Canaan Smith

While nine of the athletes are traveling from Belize, Dirks is flying in from the United States.

Sutherland said that the BAA asked the Federation of Mexican Athletics Associations (FMAA) to allow our athletes to participate “because we want our athletes to get timing and more events under their belt in order to qualify for ranking points for the Olympics and the Pan American Games 2023.”

The FMAA was kind enough to accept and that gives our athletes an added opportunity to make it to the Olympics.

The team is being be led by BAA Executive member and coach Shelmadine Carr.
