By Benjamin Flowers: A recent report from Friends of Conservation and Development (FCD) shows that Guatemalans conducting illegal farming and other activities is rampant within the Adjacency Zone and the Belize Territorial Volunteers is calling on the Government of Belize (GOB) to urgently address the matter.
The report notes that areas within the Chiquibul National Park and Caracol Archaeological reserves are heavily compromised due to deforestation for cattle ranching and milpa farming. Notably, 80 percent of the deforestation within these areas has occurred within the Adjacency Zone, according to FCD.
“This is in blatant disregard for our protective acts and laws and the full extent of the damage being done is immeasurable,” the BTV said. “The BTV is calling on GOB to give serious attention to these encroachments! We must take immediate action, step up patrols and stop ALL encroachments.”
The BTV went on to say that the previous government administration “failed miserably” in addressing border issues and as such it is demanding that the current administration come up with a plan to show how these issues will be addressed and share it with the public.
