Large sinkhole in Mexico now larger than football field

Posted: Thursday, June 10, 2021. 1:37 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: In May, authorities noticed a large sinkhole in Zacatepec, Puebla in Mexico.

To date, the sinkhole has grown to over 400 feet, larger than the size of a football field and has begun swallowing a house.

The Mexican Government has now sent soldiers in to keep people away from the edge of the hole which is 50 feet deep.

Residents in the area believe that the sinkhole is as a result of excessive ground water extraction by factories or a water bottling plant in the area.

Meanwhile experts have said that the water in the hole has strong currents.

Authorities have warned that it is not a tourist attraction and the public should stay away from it.

Metal barriers have been put in place to keep people far from the sinkhole.
