US President Joe Biden pledges over a half-billion COVID-19 vaccine doses to developing countries

Posted: Thursday, June 10, 2021. 7:40 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: President of the United States, Joe Biden has pledged to send over a half-billion Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine shots to some 9 developing countries, according to the BBC.

Biden, who is in the United Kingdom for the 47th G7 Summit, said that the US would be making the “largest single purchase and donation of Covid-19 vaccines by any single country ever.”

Biden said that the US will purchase the vaccines from Pfizer at a “not for profit” price, and with the aim to begin shipping those doses through the COVAX initiative, being run by the African Union, by August. The target is to have 200 million doses shipped by the end of this year and the remaining 300 million by June 2022.

The announcement comes after the United States already pledged to give 80 million doses to countries around the world.

The COVAX vaccine sharing initiative is aiming to vaccinate the most vulnerable 20 percent of every nation around the world.
