By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Nine of eleven Belizean athletes will compete today in Mexico’s National Athletics Championship in Querétaro in their quest to qualify to the Tokyo Olympics and the Pan American Games.

Mexican National Championships are only for Mexicans, but since they are participating as invited guests of the Federation of Mexican Athletics Associations (FMAA), their times will be considered official for qualification to the Olympics and Pan Am Games.

The championship starts today at 5:00 pm at the Olympic Stadium in Querétaro and closes on Sunday, June 13.

Ashontie Carr and Samantha Dirks will run the 400m at 5:40 pm in the fourth event of the day.

Then, at 6:05 pm, Linden Wade and Gary Neal try their luck in the 400m as well.

Hilary Gladden will compete in the 100m semi-finals at 6:05 pm.

Shaun Gill, Mark Anderson, Rahim Monsanto, Jihad Ahmaad will then participate in the 100m semi-finals at 6:50.

Should they qualify, the 100m finals will be run at 8:25 pm (F) and 8:45 pm (M).

Ashantie Carr and Canaan Smith should see action on Saturday and Sunday.

The Belize Athletics Association (BAA) president Deon Sutherland said that the BAA asked the Federation of Mexican Athletics Associations (FMAA) to allow our athletes to participate “because we want our athletes to get timing and more events under their belt in order to qualify for ranking points for the Olympics and the Pan American Games 2023.”

The FMAA was kind enough to accept and that gives our athletes an added opportunity to make it to the Olympics.
