By Aaron Humes: With about a month to go before the end of the sugar season, Belize Sugar Industries Limited/American Sugar Refining (BSI/ASR) is approaching several milestones.
As of June 6, production of sugar was 96,750 tons, up almost 20 thousand tons from the same point last season. 926 thousand tons of cane had been ground, more than 150 thousand than the same point last season. Direct consumption sugar is at its highest with 46,749 tons produced, and is rapidly approaching fifty thousand.
BSI/ASR’s last estimate is that approximately 1.1 million tons of cane were available for grinding this season, down from the estimated 1.3 million at the start of crop.
Nonetheless, it represents a significant recovery for the number one agricultural producer in Belize after a dismal season marked by drought at the beginning and inundating rain near the end.
The tons cane/tons sugar (TC/TS) ratio stands at 9.58, slightly lower than last season’s total; and marks of cane quality and factory efficiency either match or are only slightly worse off than last year.
