Oscar Quiroz wins 2nd consecutive National Time Trial Cycling Championship on Sunday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Oscar Quiroz of the 501 Valvoline Cycling Team won a second-in-a-row National Time Trial Championship on Sunday on the John Smith Road.

“It was an amazing feeling to be entering this prestigious race as the defending champion of the ITT and once again defending my title as the new 2021 National ITT Champion of Belize,” Quiroz said on social media.

“In addition, today was the first day of blasting my new team kit – 501 Valvoline Cycling Team!” he posted.

“We managed to pull out two 2nd places in both the junior and youth categories respectively. Myself pulling off the 1st for the overall and elite category. Fresh start and not the last time you will be hearing from us.”

 The 20-mile race started and ended by the Western Pines junction on the John Smith. The race covered two laps on the John Smith Road which stretches from the Philip Goldson International Airport Road roundabout to the George Price Highway Mile-8 roundabout.

Quiroz won the National Time Trial Championship in 45 minutes and 13 seconds. U-23 Eric Trapp of Westrac Alliance was second in 45:53, 40 seconds behind. Another U-23 rider, Joshua Fuller of the 501 Valvoline Cycling Team, was 3rd clocking 46.36, 1:23 behind.

G-Flows Giovanni Lovell took 4th in 46:42 (+0:01.29), Robert Liam Stewart was 5th in 47:05 (+0:47.05), G-Flow’s Shane Jones placed 6th in 47:10, Westrac Alliance’s Byron Pope was 7th in 47:45, Westrac’s Carlton Robinson finished 8th in 47:46, Project BZE’s Jyven Gonzalez placed 9th in 48:46, and Mairon Muñoz rounded off the Top 10 in 49:26.

In the Elite Category alone, Quiroz was followed by Lovell in 2nd and Jones in 3rd.

Twenty-one riders in three categories, Elite, U-23 and Masters, competed in the National Time Trial Championship.

In total, 33 riders participated when the Women’s (4) and the Men’s Junior (8) races are included.

Quiroz won the last National Time Trial Championship held on Burrell Boom Road on June 22, 2019, in 43 minutes and 39 seconds.

This coming Sunday, June 20, Quiroz will attempt to win the National Road Championship as well.

Edgar Nissan Arana won the 2019 edition in 4:34:59, but he was disqualified after testing positive for EPO in an antidoping test conducted after the 2019 Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic.

Ron Vasquez, who completed the championship in in 2nd position in 4:35:46, was declared the winner after Arana’s disqualification.
