Mexico receives 1.35 million Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine doses from the US

Posted: Tuesday, June 15, 2021. 1:31 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today, Mexico received a donation of 1.35 million Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccines from the US.

The vaccine doses will be used to vaccinate anyone over 18 in four cities along the U.S. border: Tijuana, Mexicali, Ciudad Juárez and Reynosa.

Mexican officials say that after the vaccinations, there will be no public health arguments to keep the border close.

Both countries have restricted border crossings to essential travel since early in the pandemic.

Mexico, like other countries around the world are seeking to vaccinate the majority of their population.

And, Mexico has also donated 100,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine to Belize and 150,000 doses to Bolivia and Paraguay. Those vaccines were produced in Argentina and bottled at a plant in Mexico.

Mexico’s vaccination programs use a mix of COVID-19 vaccines.

Most recently, authorities have seen a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in Quintana Roo.
