By Benjamin Flowers: Five senior management positions at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA), including that of the CEO, are being vacated after the board of directors decided not to renew their contracts; a decision which the Chairman of the Board Dr. Andre Sosa says that he welcomes all scrutiny on.
Appearing n Channel 5’s Open Your eyes this week, Sosa said that the ensuing scrutiny due to the decision is a good thing for the hospital and in fact, wishing there had been more scrutiny to begin with. He stressed that the hospital is in crisis, noting that from 2016-2021, the hospital has over $35 million in outstanding collections.
Sosa noted that while 2020 was an exceptional year due to the pandemic, there was still $9 million in bills that hadn’t been collected, which he felt was an alarming trend.
“The board feels like it is necessary to shake things up, it is necessary to get a new energy from all the directors in the institution because we have big dreams and aspirations that are the dreams and aspirations of the Belizean public. I come from a clinical background and my commitment to the public is that only the very best people will be able to attain those positions, that is my commitment,” Sosa said.
Current CEO Michelle Hoare, who assumed the post back in July 2018, is out on two weeks’ leave and will not return when it is over. Other affected posts include the Nursing Administrator, Human Resources Manager, and Financial controller.
