By Benjamin Flowers: Several employees of Belize Telemedia Limited are suing the company, claiming that it failed to pay them severance when they were terminated.
The case, which began yesterday, is being heard virtually in the Supreme Court before Justice Lisa Shoman. BTL is being represented by Melissa Balderamos-Mahler and assisted by Senior Counsel Andrew Marshalleck, while attorney Darrell Bradley is representing the claimant.
In April, BTL made 24 employees redundant following a sharp decline in revenues. Many of those workers say that the company still owes them for their years of service, while the company’s position is that the matter of severance was settled when BTL and the Communications Workers Union forged an agreement for a contributory pension scheme. BTL said that the workers would be paid their severance through that scheme.
