By Benjamin Flowers: Leadership of the United Democratic Party (UDP) remains in question this week, as reports circulating are that over 200 delegates have decided to vote out Patrick Faber as the Leader of the Opposition. While he did not confirm, Party Chairman Michael Peyrefitte, said this week that if the matter reaches his desk, Faber will have to be recalled.
In an interview with Channel 7’s Jules Vasquez, Peyrefitte said that he would not like having to recall Faber because he doesn’t feel that it would be in the Party’s best interest at this time, but he remains committed to ensuring that under his watch, the UDP abides by the Party’s constitution.
Discussions of deposing Faber as leader began surfacing earlier this month when Faber found himself publicly disgraced after video footage leaked online of him in an aggressive domestic dispute with the mother of one of his children. First in line to condemn him was Mesopotamia Area Representative Shyne Barrow, and later Faber’s former rival for leader, John Saldivar, chimed in saying Faber should have already resigned.
Saldivar is reportedly the one who garnered the support of the delegates to have Faber removed. Albert Division Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton, had initially disassociated herself from the call to have Faber removed, saying that he still enjoys her confidence as party leader; however, she later said that she had formally requested of the Party Leader and Party Chairman to convene urgent meetings of the Central Executive Committee and the National Party Council to discuss potential changes to the party structure.
Those meetings are scheduled to be held this week. More on this as information becomes available.
