By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Danish National Football Team midfielder Christian Eriksen, who collapsed during a football match on Saturday, will be fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
“After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter),” the Danish Football Union (DBU) said on Thursday. “This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances.”
The American Heart Association (AMA) says “An ICD is a battery-powered device placed under the skin that keeps track of your heart rate. Thin wires connect the ICD to your heart. If an abnormal heart rhythm is detected the device will deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heartbeat.”
The AMA says ICDs “have been very useful in preventing sudden death in patients with known, sustained ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation.”
The Denmark National Team doctor Morten Boesen said that Eriksen’s heart stopped beating after collapsing on the pitch at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen during the Euro 2020 match against Finland last Saturday.
Boesen said Eriksen “was gone” after suffering cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator before being taken to a hospital where he is still in recovery.
The BDU said that Eriksen “has accepted the solution”, that was “confirmed by specialists nationally and internationally who all recommend the same treatment.”
At this point, doctors have not indicated if Eriksen will be able to resume his playing career, but it’s possible he may.
Dutch player Daley Blind, who coincidentally played today in the Netherlands game against Austria, has an ICD device on him.
Daley had one fitted after an inflamed heart muscle diagnosis in 2019.
