By Benjamin Flowers: In an unprecedented move, 290 delegates of the United Democratic Party have signed a petition to recall party leader Patrick Faber.
The signatures were dropped off today at UDP headquarters by former UDP candidate Tony Herrera, who also had Phillip Willoughby with him.
“The constitution called for 172, we got 290 signatures from 26 constituencies here,” Herrera said. “This is a resounding answer from the delegates, this is the rank and file of the party, so for us to go over 172 means a lot for us and also for the party. It sends a clear message as to where we want to go.”
Herrera said that the charge to have Faber removed was being led by the UDP’s Coalition for Change, a group of around 20 members which includes Faber’s former rival for the leadership position, John Saldivar. However, Herrera stressed that the movement is bigger than Saldivar, and clarified that Saldivar is barred by the party’s constitution from offering himself up for leadership.
Delegates from Mesopotamia, Corozal North, and Queen Square, the constituencies of three seated parliamentarians Shyne Barrow, Hugo Patt, and Denise Barrow were among those who signed the list.
“It’s not only the people that lost, it is also the parliamentarians that are not satisfied with the way our party leader is leading this party,” Herrera added. “One thing I can say is that we are not happy with the way he is leading, He is not fit to lead and that is the bottom line.”
The delivery of the petition will now trigger a procedure where the party will have to vote at a national convention, where votes from 355 delegates will be needed to effectively unseat Faber. Herrera said that the Coalition is more than sure they can secure enough votes to unseat Faber at the convention but are hoping he would see the 290 signatures and resign.
He also stressed that the party does have someone in mind to take over the position as party leader, however, that person will not be named at this time.
