Eriksen visits Denmark National Football Team after he is released from hospital, goes home

Posted: Saturday, June 19, 2021. 4:23 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Christian Eriksen surprised his teammates with a visit after being released from the Rigshospitalet on Friday after having an ICD (heart starter) implanted on him.

Eriksen was at the hospital since Saturday, June 12, after collapsing due to a cardiac arrest during the game Denmark were playing against Finland in the Euro 2020 at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said at the time that Eriksen “was gone” and had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator.

The Danish Football Union (DBU) said on Twitter that Eriksen’s operation had been successful. Earlier the DBU had said Eriksen would be fitted with an ICD that works both as a pacemaker and defibrillator.

“The operation went well, and I am doing well under the circumstances,” Eriksen said in the tweet.

The DBU said Eriksen visited his teammates while they were training on Friday at Helsingor in the outskirts of Copenhagen after leaving the hospital.

“It was really great to see the guys again after the fantastic game they played last night,” Eriksen said in the tweet. “No need to say that I will be cheering on them on Monday against Russia.”

On Thursday, it was the fans at Parken Stadium who cheered for him as the Belgian National Team held a tribute in Eriksen’s honour. A gigantic jersey was unveiled before the kick-off between Denmark and Belgium and at the 10th minute the game was stopped for a short moment to celebrate that he is alive. Both Danish and Belgian fans applauded Eriksen.

So far, Denmark have lost both their games to Finland and Belgium.

Though UEFA initially suspended the game, which had been stopped at the 42nd minute when Eriksen collapsed, Danish manager Kasper Hjulmand said they were practically forced to continue playing two hours later against Finland. Denmark lost 1-0.

The DBU said Eriksen went home after he visited with the team.
