By Aaron Humes: For the first time in Belizean history, members of a political party have petitioned the Governor General to remove their leader from office.
We have received a copy of a letter written by Moses “Shyne” Barrow to Governor General Froyla Tzalam in his capacity as Chief Parliamentary Whip of the Opposition and signed by two fellow parliamentarians: his aunt and Queens Square representative, Denise Barrow, and Faber’s first deputy leader Hugo Patt of Corozal North.
Barrow cites Section 47(5) of the Constitution, which grants power to the Governor General to remove the Leader of the Opposition from office if he no longer holds the confidence of the majority of members of the Opposition in the House.
Moses and Denise Barrow and Hugo Patt indicate in the letter that they no longer have confidence in him, but does not explicitly say why.
However, they have agreed that Moses Barrow, a first-term area representative, be propose as a replacement and invites the Governor General to remove Faber under subsection 4 of the same section and substitute Barrow under subsection 2.
This turns up the pressure on Faber substantially as he also faces a recall of his leadership from within the party.
Faber has yet to speak publicly but promises to do so in the near future.
We understand that Moses “Shyne” Barrow will personally deliver the letter to the Governor-General tomorrow morning in Belmopan.
We will continue to follow this story.
