Belize Electricity Limited honors over 2000 “Golden Citizens” with credit on their light bills

Posted: Tuesday, June 22, 2021. 6:06 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: There are over 2,000 Belizean senior citizens benefitting from reduced electricity bills through BEL’s Golden Citizens program, according to the company.

Under the initiative, Belizeans 65 years and older automatically receive a credit to their account of up to 60-kilowatt hours.

“Our customers mean everything to us. Over 2,600 Golden Citizens countrywide are receiving a lifetime credit on their monthly electricity bills as a token of thanks for a lifetime of contributions,” the company said on its official Facebook page.

BEL explained that the credit is given automatically once an account holder reaches the age of 65. The company also stressed that the initiative is not tied to any relief efforts for the COVID-19 pandemic, as the program existed before the pandemic hit Belize. Rather, the initiative falls in line with its commitment to finding new ways to engage with the people and communities it serves.
