Police Department warns of fake wanted posters circulating

Posted: Tuesday, June 22, 2021. 9:59 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The Belize Police Department is warning the public that there are currently fake wanted posters being circulated.

The posters bear the image and particulars of a man and a woman purporting that they are wanted by police for specified crimes.

Public Relations Director of the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, explained that one way to identify fake wanted posters is to check the source, as the department has specific means of dissemination for wanted posters that can easily be verified.

“With technology these days, people who have malice against you could just make a flyer to bring danger to you or cause a stink or scandal to your name and we wouldn’t want that to happen to any of you to experience something like that, knowing that you are not wanted for any crime,” Yearwood said.

He noted that there are also specific logos that need to appear on the wanted poster, such as the Crime Stoppers Belize logo, which will indicate the authenticity.
