Forest Department considers use of aerial firefighting for fire near Sleeping Giant

Posted: Thursday, June 24, 2021. 7:54 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma: Today, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management through the Forest Department informed that it is considering the use of aerial firefighting for the fire near the Sleeping Giant.

The ministry says that high capacity and high photography resolution drones are continuously being utilized for aerial reconnaissance.

The Ministry noted that the area impacted by the fire that continues to smoke and smoulder has increased in size up to Wednesday, June 23, at 3:00 p.m.

“The ministry is concerned about the escalation and potential impact and threat on the forest ecosystem and, therefore, is considering the use of aerial firefighting support to extinguish the fire. The public is assured that the fire poses no threat to human life, settlements, or infrastructure,” the ministry said.

Another update will be provided tomorrow.
