Prime Minister to meet Mexican President to discuss partial scope agreement

Posted: Thursday, June 24, 2021. 11:20 am CST.

By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño said that he is scheduled to meet soon with Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador to discuss a partial scope agreement.

Briceno says that the purpose will be for Mexico to purchase more Belizean products.

Cattle is currently being exported to Mexico and Briceño says that his administration is to broaden that export to more Belizean products.

In addition, PM Briceño said that one of the many reasons that the economy is picking up, is because of his administration’s farm to table plan.

“We eat what we grow and grow what we eat. Our farmers grow cabbage and tomato, so we do not import cabbage and tomato,” Briceño said.

With regards to BPO’s, the Prime Minister says that the industry has increased to over 1,000 new jobs and 600 more jobs are expected to be made available throughout this year.

With the re-opening of the Freezone, 1,200 jobs were created and with COVID-19 protocols strictly enforced, there has been no COVID-19 cases reported there.
