By Aaron Humes: Area representative for Mesopotamia and party chief Moses “Shyne” Barrow arrived at 4 p.m. this afternoon to be sworn in as the parliamentary Leader of the Opposition by Governor General Froyla Tzalam at Belize House in Belmopan.
He replaces Patrick Faber who remains overall Leader of the United Democratic Party.
Faber was essentially deposed when fellow members of the House of Representatives Denise Barrow and first deputy party leader Hugo Patt switched their loyalty to Barrow, the youngest member of the UDP delegation in the Lower House.
Those two, plus Shyne Barrow wrote to the GG saying they no longer have confidence in Faber to be their parliamentary leader, barely a year after his narrow election in a party convention in Belize City.
Faber remains UDP Party Leader but is facing a recall petition signed by what appears to be a majority of delegates from the convention.
This is the second occurence of a party/Assembly leadership split, after George Price lost his Freetown seat in 1984 but continued to lead the People’s United Party outside the House while Florencio Marin Sr was titular Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
We will continue to follow the story.
