By Benjamin Flowers: In the spirit of keeping one of Belize’s premier tourist destinations in pristine condition, the Tipsy Tuna sports bar in Placencia is offering a free drink to anyone that will fill a bucket with beach litter.
Under the initiative, adults get a mixed drink of local rum with juice or soda and kids get a free smoothie. The bucket must be filled with litter such as plastics and styrofoam as sargassum, driftwood, and pint bottles do not count towards a drink.
Gillian Zabaneh, co-owner of the Tipsy Tuna, explained that the idea came from a friend who tagged Tipsy Tuna’s Facebook page in a post showing a similar initiative. She noted that beach litter is normally not a problem but has become an issue at this time of year.
“With the sargassum coming in, it just seems to be bringing a lot of plastics,” Zabaneh said.
She noted that the initiative is being well received and that local rum companies, as well as a recycling company, have begun discussions about forming a private sector partnership to strengthen the initiative. Zabaneh encouraged other destinations that have the ability to do so, to start similar initiatives.
