By Zoila Palma: Chargé d’Affaires Kieth Gilges told BBN that the United States remains very supportive of Belize’s relationship with Taiwan.

“Other areas that we work on, obviously very supportive of Belize’s relationship with Taiwan. As something that we as fellow democracies share these values and we need to speak out more about that,” Gilges said.

Gilges noted that his engagement with the Taiwanese Embassy and Ambassador David Chien and his predecessor, Ambassador Chen included partnerships on many projects.

In 2019, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Julie Chung met with then PUP Leader, John Briceno to discuss the importance of the relationship between Belize and Taiwan in the areas of trade and economic and infrastructure development.

“Belize’s strong support for Taiwan and close diplomatic and political ties underscores its commitment to transparency, human rights, and self-determination,” a statement from the embassy said.

Belize and Taiwan established bilateral relations in 1989 and continue to enjoy strong diplomatic friendship.
