New U.S. Chargé d’Affaires will be career Foreign Service Officer, Leyla Moses-Ones

By Zoila Palma: The U.S. Embassy’s Chargé d’Affaires Kieth Gilges is ending his tour in Belize.

BBN’s Zoila Gonzalez asked Gilges if there will be an ambassador coming to Belize soon.

“The process for us to be selected for these various positions around the world is kind of a long one so at the same time that I was bidding to get my next assignment, so was Leyla working on getting the assignment here. So my successor as Deputy Chief of Mission arriving as Chargé d’Affaires is Leyla Moses-Ones. I’ve known her for 20 years. She is fantastic,” Gilges said.

Gilges also said that he is confident that Belize will have an ambassador before too long.

Moses-Ones began her diplomatic career as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State in July 2001.

Leyla has served in the positions of consular officer in San Jose, Costa Rica; political officer in Maputo, Mozambique; Watch Officer at the Operations Center; Deputy Principal Officer in Adana, Turkey; Public Affairs Officer in Munich, Germany; and Deputy Director of the Bureau for European and Eurasian Affairs’ Office of Policy and Global Issues (EUR/PGI) in Washington, D.C.

Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Leyla worked for five years in legislative affairs and public relations in Washington, D.C.

Leyla speaks Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, German, and Albanian.

She is the mother of three children, and her husband is an executive leadership coach and retired U.S. Navy captain.
