Hilary Gladden finishes 5th in Central American Athletics Championships, Costa Rican sets new record in Men’s 800m

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Hilary Gladden finished 5th in the Women’s 100m Final in 12.32 seconds on Saturday morning as the CADICA Athletics Championships started in San Jose, Costa.

Tricia Flores was 7th in 12.59.

The winner was Genioska Cancel from Puerto Rico in 11.65.

Sixteen Belizean athletes are competing in the Central American meet as they also attempt to make the mark to qualify to the Tokyo Olympics.

The Men’s 100m was won by Panama’s Arturo Deliser in 10.42.

Our runners didn’t qualify to the finals. In the semifinal heats, Shaun Gill (10.99) was 5th in Heat 2 and 10th overall while Brandon Jones (11.09) was 7th and Mark Anderson 8th (11.13) in Heat 1. Gill missed qualifying to the Final by 0.09 seconds.

In the Men’s 800m, Juan Diego Castro of Costa Rica got gold setting a new Central American record clocking 1:49.87.

Amir Ramos was 8th in the Final in 2:15,17.

The team traveled by road to Guatemala City on Thursday evening arriving on Friday morning. From there they flew to San Jose yesterday evening.

Samantha Dirks, Brandon Jones and Shaun Gill flew from the United States to Costa Rica.

The athletes who travelled from Belize are Hilary Gladden, Tricia Flores, Leonellie Myers, Ana Lopez-Camp, Mark Anderson, Rahim Monsanto, Jihad Ahmaad, Gary Neal, Hance Card, Brandon Adolphus, Amir Ramos, Faisal Ahmad, and Cojac Smith.
