By BBN Staff: A US report had indicated that Belize is a major transshipment point for illicit drugs.
“Belize is bordered by countries where the drug trade is controlled by well-organized and extremely violent drug cartels,” the report said.
The United States Embassy in Belize continues to support efforts in crime fighting and to improve the ability of law enforcement in Belize.
Chargé d’Affaires, Keith Gilges told BBN that the US Government continues to provide opportunities for capacity building and to improve the ability of local law enforcement to collect information.
“We have a role to play because while the drugs are produced in Northern South America, so many of those drugs are consumed in the US. So, we have a consumption problem, Northern South America has a production problem and Belize has a transshipment problem,” Gilges said.
Gilges further explained that the process by which drugs move through Belize has a corrosive effect on law enforcement in Belize.
“It takes people who are corrupted by the lure of money or other things and once you start down that path, then where are you drawing the line. So, we work with Belizean law enforcement to reduce threat that drug plays to the fabric of Belizean society,” Gilges added.
The U.S. Embassy continues to collaborate with and assist law enforcement units in Belize to tackle this issue.
