It’s the best time to build your wooden dream home!

By BBN Staff: The history of industry in Belize evolves around logwood and Mahogany.

By the 1700’s, the tropical timber, Mahogany replaced logwood as the main export from Belize to Europe and Spain.

The country’s economy was based on the exportation of Mahogany up until the 1900’s.

Up to date, carpenters, home owners, Belizeans and foreigners consider Mahogany, a prime and preferred wood to build with.

However, lumber yards across the country have studied and identified many rare, exotic and beautiful species of wood in Belize.

These exotic woods, when completed into finished product expose their own unique designs. But as the demand for lumber gets greater and the supply gets limited, the price continues to see a steady increase.

Construction workers and home builders usually opt for fig and other soft wood to use as form board which is relatively cheaper than exotic woods, running somewhere between $1.85 to $2.20 plus GST per feet.

Selected hardwoods such as Bullet tree, nargusta, mylady, santa maria, yemery and others are also used for construction and can be used more than once. The price of these is roughly at $3 to $4 plus GST per ft.

But for those kitchen lovers with unique counter tops, loggers also extract exotic woods such as purpleheart, black poisonwood, granadillo, cabbage bark and more. These run somewhere from $5 to $7 plus GST per feet.

And, traditional builders that prefer to stick with the Mahogany and Cedar can also buy those at a rate of $6 to $7 plus GST per feet.

As the demand increases and the supply becomes more limited, construction workers and home builders are now taking advantage of the opportunity to build homes, apartments, home improvement projects and more.

Meanwhile, the Government has indicated their intention to issue licenses to import hardwoods. This will undoubtedly affect the prices of wood in Belize thus affecting the cost of building.

Additionally, as the Government moves towards sustainable logging practices, this will also affect the cost of doing logging, trickling down to the sales prices of lumber in Belize.

So, if you are thinking about building your wooden home, this is the best time to complete it.
