By Benjamin Flowers: Thousands gathered in London over the weekend to protest COVID-19 lockdowns despite a surge in cases of the delta variant, reports the BBC.
Many were already protesting strict lockdown measures and have intensified due to the proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, which would further empower police in England and Wales to crack down on non-violent protests, including those that authorities deem to be too noisy or a nuisance.
The protests bring an increased risk of COVID-19 transmission particularly the delta variant which experts believe may be up to 60 percent more contagious than the alpha strain which caused the global pandemic. According to CNBC News, the delta variant has spread quickly among young people and those not vaccinated, while 117 people have died from this strain, 50 of whom were vaccinated.
Despite the risks, more protests are reportedly planned for the upcoming week.
Meanwhile, there are reportedly plans to pausing and reviewing the current lockdown measures in London on July 15.
