Caribbean “Disaster Fighters” team up for campaign on impact of COVID-19 and other disasters

By Aaron Humes: A group of prominent entertainers from the worlds of music, social media and sport have teamed up as “Disaster Fighters” to disseminate informational messages on fighting the impact of hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, COVID-19 and other hazards.

The TikTok campaign started Monday and features cricketers Dwayne Bravo (Trinidad and Tobago); Darren Sammy (Saint Lucia); and Kieran Powell (Saint Kitts and Nevis, along with musicians Mr Killa of Grenada, Tafa Mi Soleil of Haiti and Ricky T of Saint Lucia.

These popular Caribbean-based TikTok creators will connect directly with their audience to spread messages about hurricane preparedness and share the personal experiences of survivors of disasters and build support among those based on the platform by creating videos using the hashtags, #DisasterFighters and #HurricaneSeason.

A TikTok Challenge #MakeAPlan will be launched to inspire and encourage the general population in order to raise awareness about hurricane preparedness through creating and sharing creative videos, singing the famous Jahmar Hamilton phrase: “Make A Plan,” in a 10-second segment of the Disaster Fighters song.

The 2021 hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. In recognition of the impact of hurricanes and the need to get the region prepared, TikTok has partnered with regional agency the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), supporting the Disaster Fighters campaign.

The initiative is supported by the World Bank, TikTok, the European Union’s Caribbean Regional Resilience Building Facility, the Canada Caribbean Resilience Facility, the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery and Binance Charity. The campaign has been developed by the risk communications firm Pacifico.
